Onehunga Rest – Auckland

This is a great place to come if you would like a short break with home cooked meals, someone to talk with if you’d like or just a quiet place to rest and restore yourself without having to travel far from central Auckland.

As Amanda Mark of Onehunga Rest writes, “I have lived in Onehunga for 23 years and moved to my current house about 18 months ago. As I’ve settled in, I’ve been thinking how lucky I am to live here and how much I would love to share my good fortune with other women.  I know how important it is for women to have a quiet place where they can rest and take time out from their families and work.

From the dining room table there is a view across the Manukau harbour to Mangere Mountain, and at the back of the house you’ll have a lovely, separate and totally private area with a garden, a deck where you can sit in peace at the outside table, your own bedroom, your lounge with television, DVD player, books, and your own shower and toilet.”

  • Your own bedroom and bathroom.
  • Eat your meals in a private garden
  • A view across the Manukau harbour to Mangere Mountain
  • Your private lounge area

Weekends only (Friday – Sunday) $30 unwaged / $70 waged.

ONEHUNGA ATTRACTIONS – things to do in the area

If you feel the urge to explore.  Onehunga has much to offer – heritage villas and bungalows (move over Ponsonby and Mt Eden!), cafes, parks, and coastal walks.

COASTAL WALK, PARK AND POOLS

There are open spaces and good walks nearby.  The Taumanu Reserve which runs along the foreshore at Onehunga and has a boardwalk linking to Hillsborough and on to Waikowhai is 5 minutes down the hill from Onehunga Rest.

Closer at hand is Jellicoe Park, a small but lovely green space with large trees, a mini Mission Bay style fountain and fencible cottages.  The Onehunga pools are located on the edge of the park.

CORNWALL PARK

There are big, open spaces and the best 360 degree view of Auckland up One Tree Hill.  Amanda is happy to drive you up to the park gates and pick you up afterward, then it’s a brisk walk to the top of the Hill to take in the views. In spring, there are daffodils and calves and lambs in the surrounding farm land and in autumn the oak trees glow with their golden leaves.

There are also three great eateries in Cornwall Park. The Cornwall Park Bistro, who do an ‘Auckland top 10’ High Tea. The Cornwall Park Cafe which has good coffee and food as well as big bean bags for lounging outside in the sun. Or go to the Cornwall Park Creamery for a delicious ice cream.

ONEHUNGA MALL – cafe destination!

If you crave good coffee, there are fantastic cafes on Onehunga Mall.

Onehunga Cafe, Iti Expresso and Luscious Cafe are our recommendations. Check out their Facebook pages. They all have great reviews.
